Overcoming the Challenge of Re-Entry: The lack of safe and stable housing is one of the most significant barriers faced by formerly incarcerated individuals. Without proper housing, it becomes difficult to secure a job, receive healthcare, and maintain relationships with family and friends. Transitional homes, like Project Homecoming, offer a solution to this problem by providing a safe and welcoming space for individuals to rebuild their lives. Our program offers 1 home that can house 4 residents at a time as well as a support system that includes social services, life-skills training, and community engagement opportunities.

Empowering Residents Through Life-Skills Training: Project Homecoming offers workshops and training on a range of life skills such as communication, computer literacy, and financial literacy. Our residents are also taught how to maintain their homes and yards, cook healthy meals, organize their lives effectively, and manage their finances. These skills enable our residents to become more independent, self-sufficient, and empowered. With support from our staff, volunteers, and partners, our residents can gain the confidence and direction needed to transition successfully into their new lives.

Integrating Faith Into Daily Life: Islam is a transformative faith that often plays a crucial role in the lives of formerly incarcerated Muslim men. However, the struggle to fully integrate faith into their daily routine after incarceration can be challenging. Project Homecoming connects residents to religious services and classes that allow them to sustain their faith practice and develop a positive and healthy relationship with their religion. By facilitating religious engagement, our program not only empowers our residents but also strengthens the familial and communal support system necessary to help them succeed.

Partnering for Success: At Dream of Detroit, partnerships are essential to our success. Our program collaborates with local and national organizations to improve the lives of our residents. Our partners provide services such as job training, counseling, legal support, and healthcare. We also work closely with donors and volunteers who help fulfill our mission and make an impact. Through partnerships, our residents are given the comprehensive support that they need to succeed in reintegrating into society and becoming self-sufficient.

Impact and Success Stories: The impact of Dream of Detroit’s Project Homecoming is undeniable. Our residents have found stable employment, obtained higher education, secured their own homes, and re-established relationships with their families and communities. They credit our program with the positive change in their lives. Our residents fulfill the purpose of our program by inspiring others with their stories and giving them hope in the possibility of second chances.

“Before I moved in, I was living in a hotel. I'm working, I'm trying to find a place to live. And I'm just exhausting myself every day going in circles. When I got in touch with Dream of Detroit, they got in touch with me, it made sense. It saved my life.”

How We Got Started

We purchased the property for Project Homecoming in the winter of 2018 and spent that year raising the funds for our property rehab. Check out our video for our fundraising campaign and hear the early vision.

Today, we have a four-bed home, ready to serve and support.
