Each year, February 21st reminds us of dreams deferred, as we reflect on the life and assassination of El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, better known as Malcolm X. Brother Malcolm, may God have mercy on him, walked with crowds but kept his virtue, and he met with kings but never lost the common touch. Across the world, he was a special hope for Black people, “our own Black shining prince,” as Ossie Davis eulogized him, and he was a reviver of the Islamic spirit for Muslims. We know the monumental mark he left on this world in martyrdom and we can only imagine the impact he could have had in a longer life.
This year, DREAM is partnering with the Ansar Collective for their annual event, “El Hajj Malik El Shabazz: Servant of Allah.” Please join us on Tuesday, February 21 from 6:30 to 8:30pm for an evening of inspirational remarks, food, and fellowship.
A Special Ramadan Fundraising Iftar
We’ll need your support like never before we as approach our 10-year anniversary and try to make 2023 our most important year ever. We’re in a deep institution-building phase and turning this once-volunteer-led effort into a sustainable organization is going to take an all-hands-on-deck push.
We hope you can save the date for March 26 at 7pm for our Ramadan fundraiser.
P.S. Next Tuesday, we’ll also be on IG Live with our brother Rasheed Shabazz from the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU), talking about Black Muslim Experiences, Housing and Community Development. Check us out on IG @dreamofdetroit.
