Give
lessons from a Dream of Detroit internship
Madison Mendiola

Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of immersing myself in Dream of Detroit’s vibrant and resilient community through lessons from my time as a DREAM intern in Detroit. Not only has this internship been a professional learning opportunity, but it’s also been a deeply personal and eye-opening experience. Coming into this program, I didn’t know much about Detroit, nor did I fully grasp its rich history and the challenges and triumphs that shape its neighborhoods. Now, I’m leaving with fresh perspectives, a deep appreciation for community organizing, and a passion for giving back.

This blog is a snapshot of my time at Dream of Detroit —from building creative projects to witnessing the power of collective action. For those curious about Detroit, DREAM’s work, or how internships can truly shape one’s outlook, I invite you to walk through my experience.

Discovering Detroit’s Strengths and Vulnerabilities

When I started this internship, Detroit was a blank slate in my mind. I had read about its struggles and knew some things about its industrial legacy, but living here and engaging with the community introduced me to a Detroit I’d never read about. Through the walking tours and conversations with locals, I caught a glimpse of its many strengths and complexities.

One moment that stood out was a walk we did with Marquette University. Touring the DREAM neighborhood where refurbished homes like Project Homecoming now stand tall, I got to see a vision for a better future right in front of me. These homes weren’t just buildings; they were symbols of resilience and hope. And behind that hope were people. People who care deeply about their community. People willing to roll up their sleeves to make it better.

I’ve learned that Detroit isn’t just about old stories of industry or economic downturns. It’s about people who believe in the future, who tirelessly pour their efforts into their neighborhoods. These aren’t just isolated efforts either; they are tightly woven into the fabric of community organizing that drives almost everything in the city.

The Power of Community Organizing

At the heart of everything I experienced in Detroit was community organizing. I witnessed firsthand how powerful it can be when people come together around common goals. Working with the DREAM Team brought this to life for me. Every meeting, every event, and every project reinforced one core truth—that nothing meaningful happens without shared vision and collective effort.

A standout moment in my time here was seeing the impact of our shared commitment to building the DREAM Center. Watching neighbors engage with us, sharing their insights and seeing their hopes for their neighborhood reflected in our collective mission, was incredibly inspiring. Detroit’s communities are living proof that real, lasting change is possible when we come together. The work DREAM does doesn’t just build physical spaces; it cultivates the kind of hope and empowerment that moves people to action.

Community organizing can be challenging and, at times, messy. But seeing Detroiters gather around shared goals provides all the motivation you could ask for. This work isn’t just about fixing things; it’s about creating something new and better for everyone involved.

Creativity as a Driver of Change

This internship has also pushed me out of my comfort zone time and time again. Whether it was tackling a creative project for the first time or contributing an idea in team meetings, I’ve learned how important it is to think outside the box. Big problems don’t always have clear solutions, so sometimes innovation is the only way through.

I’ve had the chance to work on projects that challenged me to think differently and contribute in practical ways. Tackling real-world challenges forced me to look at problems from multiple perspectives and strategize solutions that would work for the community’s unique dynamics. More importantly, I saw how creativity and innovation are central to community organizing. It’s not just about resources and plans but also about finding new ways to address old problems.

With the guidance of passionate and hardworking mentors, I’ve grown more confident in my ability to bring creative thinking into everything I do.

Lessons for the Future

The most impactful revelation from this internship has been the value of investing in a community. While I’ve learned practical skills like project management, communication, and problem-solving, I’ve also developed a deep appreciation for creating connections and organizing resources around shared visions.

This experience taught me that giving back isn’t just about charity; it’s about actively participating in the systems and spaces you’re a part of. Investing energy and care into your community helps build something tangible, something the next generation can build upon.

Looking Ahead

As my time with DREAM comes to a close, I feel a spark of excitement for what lies ahead. Detroit has given me more than just an internship experience. It’s given me a passion for community-driven work and a clearer sense of what’s possible when people are united. I don’t think I’ll forget the resilience of the people I’ve met or the lessons I’ve learned through their dedication.

Moving forward, I’m inspired to find new ways to take these lessons and apply them wherever I go, finding opportunities to invest in other communities while contributing my own creative ideas.

Whether you’re an intern, a community member, or just someone interested in what’s happening in Detroit, there are endless opportunities here to learn, grow, and give back.
