Let’s Meet, Greet & Grill: Community Event

140 140 people viewed this event.

Neighbors don’t always get the chance to actually meet each other. Between work, school runs, and the general busyness of life, it’s easy to live two doors down from someone for years without ever learning their name. That’s exactly what Let’s Meet, Greet & Grill is here to change.

On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 6:00 PM, The Dream Community Association is teaming up with Dream of Detroit to host a free, open-to-the-public gathering at Barthwell Stewart Park. Expect good food, free books, and plenty of genuine connection. Whether you’ve called this neighborhood home for thirty years, just moved in last month, or have been a volunteer with us, a community supporter, or just want to close out the season with us, this event is built for you. Come hungry. Come curious. Come ready to connect.

What can you expect at the event?

This isn’t a formal program with a stiff agenda. It’s a relaxed, come-as-you-are evening designed to bring people together naturally. Here’s what’s on deck:

Grill and good food. There’ll be plenty of food and beverages provided, so you can spend the evening mingling instead of worrying about what to bring.

Meet our neighbors. This is the heart of the event. Take the opportunity to connect with the people who share our streets, our parks, and our daily life. You’ll also get a chance to learn more about what’s happening in the DREAM neighborhood right now.

A free book giveaway. Thanks to our book sponsor, Making Spirits Bright: Metro Detroit Book Bank, attendees can pick out a free book while supplies last. Check out Sal & Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez and This Side of Home by Renée Watson for your young reader.

Community fun. Beyond the food and books, the whole evening is meant to feel like a space to build new relationships and strengthen old ones.

Why does a free book giveaway matter?

Access to books isn’t a given for every family, and a free book giveaway helps close that gap in a simple, meaningful way. Additionally, it gives kids and adults alike a reason to browse, chat, and maybe bond over a shared favorite title. So if you’ve got a young reader at home, or you’re just looking to refresh your own bookshelf, swing by the table and see what’s available. Since supplies are limited, earlier arrivals will have the best selection.

Where and when is Let’s Meet, Greet & Grill?

Mark your calendar for Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 6:00 PM at Barthwell Stewart Park, 2318 Fullerton Ave, Detroit, MI 48238. Free parking and outdoor community space are available, so getting there and settling in should be easy. Simply bring yourself, your family, and your neighbors. There’s nothing else required to participate.

Who is welcome to attend?

Everyone. Truly. Whether you’ve lived in the neighborhood for decades, just arrived, or you’re simply curious about what’s happening in the community, you belong at this event. There’s no membership requirement and no cost to attend, because building a stronger neighborhood shouldn’t come with barriers.

Over the course of the evening, you’ll have the chance to:

  • Meet our neighbors
  • Strengthen community relationships
  • Share a meal together
  • Discover free books
  • Enjoy time outdoors in the park
  • Build connections that last beyond one evening

Ready to meet our neighbors?

Community isn’t built through big gestures alone. Often, it’s built through small moments, like sharing a meal, swapping a book recommendation, or simply learning someone’s name for the first time. Let’s Meet, Greet & Grill offers exactly that kind of moment, and it’s happening right in your own neighborhood.

So grab your family, we’ll invite our neighbors, and head to Barthwell Stewart Park on September 15. No RSVP necessary; we’ll still save you a plate. No cost, no reason to stay home. We’ll see you there.
