Dream of Detroit 2026 Book Club: Read. Reflect. Organize. Grow.
Feeling always grateful. Because we are officially launching the Dream of Detroit Book Club 2026! Our guiding motto for this year is simple yet profound: Read. Reflect. Organize. Grow.
We are bringing people together not just to read, but to think deeply, build lasting relationships, and strengthen our collective commitment to justice. Specifically, this book club will explore race, identity, liberation, faith, history, and collective transformation through powerful literature and courageous conversation.
If you have been looking for community book clubs in Detroit that go beyond surface-level chatter, you have absolutely found your home. Together, we will dive into ideas that shape our world.
Why Join Our Book Club?
Obviously, there are many ways to get involved in our city. However, reading together offers a unique space for connection. Furthermore, learning alongside community members committed to justice allows us to connect Dream of Detroit’s mission with deeper political and social understanding.
The 2026 Book Club Series Lineup
Consequently, we have carefully selected three incredible books for this year’s series. Each text beautifully aligns with our mission of neighborhood revitalization, spiritual grounding, and community empowerment.
June 25, 2026: Stamped from the Beginning
By Ibram X. Kendi
To begin our series, we are diving into Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America. Specifically, this book offers a profound exploration of how racist ideas were created, normalized, and challenged throughout American history. Moreover, it illustrates exactly how understanding that history actively shapes the work of justice today. Therefore, this foundational text will set the stage for all our subsequent conversations.
August 13, 2026: Black Muslim Freedom Dreams
By Samiha Rahman
Next, we will gather in August to read Black Muslim Freedom Dreams. Importantly, this inspiring book provides a deep reflection on Black Muslim thought, collective care, Islamic education, and liberation movements. Alhamdulillah, these movements are actively shaping visions for a more just future right now. Consequently, discussing this book will help us envision how we can directly apply these freedom dreams to our ongoing work in Detroit.
October 22, 2026: Malcolm in the Desert
By Ilyasah Shabazz
Finally, we will close out our 2026 series with Malcolm in the Desert. Without a doubt, this text offers a deeply spiritual and personal exploration of Malcolm X’s transformation. Specifically, it examines the critical role faith played in his evolving understanding of justice, humanity, and liberation. Because Malcolm’s legacy is so deeply tied to our community’s history, this discussion will undoubtedly be a powerful conclusion to our year of reading.
