This weekend, we’ve got two big events happening! First, on Saturday morning, the Coalition for Property Tax Justice is hosting a critical town hall meeting about an ordinance we’re trying to get through City Council for property tax reform. More on that in the email forwarded below but plan to be there 10:30am at the Muslim Center Mosque and Community Center.

Then, on Sunday, we’ve got the official launch of an incredible book called At Their Feet: 50 Black Muslim Elders Share Stories of Faith and Community Life. Many of these stories were also included in DREAM’s Detroit Muslim Storytelling Project and we’ll have some of our youth interviewers who led that project presenting as well. Same location, Sunday at 2pm.

Whether you come out on Saturday morning, Sunday afternoon, or both—don’t miss a chance to help build Detroit’s future or honor our past.

The Coalition for Property Tax Justice is inviting members of City Council and State legislators for a People’s Forum about our Property Tax Reform Ordinance. Before new legislation can be scheduled for a public hearing and voted on by the City Council, the City’s lawyers (a/k/a Corporation Counsel) must approve it “as to form.” Acting on behalf of the Mayor, Corporation Counsel illegitimately denied the Reform Ordinance’s approval, disrupting the democratic process. We are asking City Council members to waive the attorneys’ approval so Detroiters can vote on the ordinance.

We are calling all Detroiters to join us at the Muslim Center, 1605 Davison Freeway, on Saturday March 4th at 10:30 AM. All you need to do is RSVP here!

At the event, YOU will have the opportunity to ask questions of Detroit City Council members about the status of the Property Tax Reform Ordinance and their position on the ordinance. You can also share your experiences with over taxation, unjust foreclosure, or your own opinion on the Ordinance. We want the Council Members to hear directly from their constituents about how important taking action against unjust over taxation is to them.

The building is an accessible space with free parking and a large seating capacity, so we are hoping to have as many supporters in the audience as possible to show the Councilmembers how important this ordinance is to Detroiters. Please spread the word to your family, friends, and any other community members you think would be interested in attending.

Limited roundtrip transportation available for eastsiders for this event leaving from The Stoudamire, 4401 Conner and The Commons, 7900 Mack. Please call 313-571-2800 during normal business hours by Wednesday March 1, 2023 to reserve your seat.

We hope to see you there!
